Plan Your Hike

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to explore North Carolina’s state trail.

Currently, about 530 miles of the 1,000-mile trail, running from Clingman’s Dome on the Tennessee line east to Jockey’s Ridge on the Atlantic coast, is on trail. The remainder follows a temporary route along back roads.

To help you find your way, we’ve divided the trail into 38 sections numbered west to east. We’re in the process of making the trail even more user-friendly by identifying recommended day trips within each section. Each description will include everything you need to know — trailheads, distance, maps and more — to plan your hike. Our first effort in this direction covers 15 day hikes for sections 13-17.

Here are some links to other pages that provide useful information for planning your trip.
