Trail Workday, Soco Gap west of Asheville General Location: Mountains, Jackson County, west of Asheville Length: N/A Difficulty: Strenuous, but we can adjust to abilities. Kid Friendly? Children under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Generally not suitable for young children. Contact: Piet Bodenhorst, 828-298-8371 or pietboden@bellsouth.net Meeting Place: At 9 am at the Moose Café (570 Brevard Road, Asheville – next to the Farmers Market) OR at 9:30 am at the Soco Gap Overlook of the Blue Ridge Parkway (intersection of BRP and Rt. 19 south of Maggie Valley) Description: Help extend the MST south towards the Smokies! We’re nearing completion of the trail in the mountains, and this stretch is one of the remaining gaps. We’ll be building new trail, and work may include using a rake and mattox (similar to a pickaxe), installing log steps, brush clearing, moving logs, and picking up debris. What to Bring: Water, lunch, gloves, rain gear. We recommend boots and long pants. Tools will be supplied; but if you have any digging tools, feel free to bring your own. No experience necessary.
