Back to Event ListHike Black Balsam during the Full Moon General Location: Mountains, Haywood County Length: 2 miles Difficulty: Easy Kid Friendly? Yes, as long as they can hike up and down a 300 foot hill, 1 mile each way. Contact: Bruce Bente, 828-692-0116, bbente@bellsouth.net Meeting Place: Westgate Sh0pping Center, 40 Westgate Parkway, Asheville for optional carpools or otherwise meet at MST Trailhead. To reach the trailhead, turn onto FS 816 near milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail head is approximately one mile down FS 816. Description: Everyone enjoyed this hike last year. We’ll do a self-directed hike this year (no leader) starting at the MST trailhead on FS 816 (see meeting place description for directions). Everyone is invited to gather on the summit of 6215 ft. Black Balsam to see the moon rise in the east and the sun set in the west, and enjoy the great views and autumn colors. The nearly full moon will rise at 6:39 PM, and the sun will set at 7:12 PM, so come early enough to enjoy both. Bring a flashlight for the hike back to your car.
